Music and nature have always gone hand in hand for Rudy Adrian. He first started making electronic music while studying Forestry Science at the University of Canterbury, and in the following years at the University of Otago while completing a degree in Botany.

The natural world continues to be a common thread in Rudy Adrian’s music through the exploration of sonic landscapes, where melody and rhythm play a secondary role to the tones and textures created by synthesizers, wood flutes and the human voice.

Rudy Adrian – Desert Realms

Rudy Adrian’s Lotuspike debut, MoonWater, was a beautifully crafted study in deeply serene and contemplative soundscapes. His new release, Desert Realms, follows that same stylistic path, exploring the spectacular stillness and vast landscape of the American Southwest desert.

Explains Rudy, “I was fortunate to spend a weekend exploring The Arches and Canyon Lands National Parks in Utah, USA. My tour guides were electronic musician Robert Carty and his partner Patricia Sandoval, who showed me a number of their favourite locations in the North American desert. On returning to New Zealand I became interested in creating music inspired by that journey.”

Rudy’s compositions are by themselves both vast and serene, but an additional level of emotion is provided by the poignant and moving flute expressions of Nick Prosser on a few of the tracks. Prosser’s stirring musical statements interact with Rudy’s vast soundscapes, filling the spectacular sonic vista with just the right amount of life and feeling; reminding the listener that although the desert realms may appear at first stark and barren, they are in fact full of life and captivating beauty.

The State Vocal-Choreographic ensemble “Russ” from ancient Vladimir, city of the Golden Ring of Russia, is comparatively young. It was 25 years of old in 1999. Since 1986 Mikhail Firsov is at the head of the ensemble. He graduated from the Gnesins State music university, he is an Honoured art worker of Russian Federation, a State prize winner of Russia.

The ensemble “Russ” is unique in its artistic face (what is always marked by the press and audience). Each artist of the group is a high professional dancer or singer. Using the richest traditions of the Russian musical culture “Russ” is an ensemble of a wide range of performance. The music of the ensemble has first of all the folk base with symphonic and rock elements.

Ethnic ensemble “Russ” – Original Russia

Music featured on his CD is a multi-moving creation for choir and folk instruments orchestra. The author, Mikhail Firsov, wrote this poem (as he defined the genre of this composition) for a concrete performing company – “Russ” State Vocal-Choreographic ensemble. His search of new performing forms and actual art conceptions, led him to a theme of Russia’s historical fate since paganism till Orthodoxy.

His attention to the idea of historical Unity of Russian people isn’t chance, it meets the present time. Besides, wide retrospective method of approach let the author cover and reproduce in colors of folk music art the variety of ancient Russian rituals.

Musical pictures are discovered consequently and figuratively in chronological order in the poem, each of them has its own meaning. The composition is opened with “Pagan Russia” showing the listeners pictures of wide steppes of old Russian Land. Unusual timbres of ancient wind instruments – ocarinas together with muffled sounds of kettle drums as background music, bring your mind to old times.

“Winter Road” going after “Whitsunday Round Dance” is a symbol of Russia with its wide, snowy landscape (you can feel it through “lonely” solo of Vladimir horn and jingling bells). In “Buffoons Have Come” the author longs to snow us the atmosphere of medieval Russia. “Bride’s Lamentation” is a poetry of Russian wedding ceremony and image of Russian woman… “Vladimirka” called after the road to penal servitude, begins with bell chimes and old Russian anthem “God, Save the Tsar”, which symbolizes faith of Russian people to their Motherland. But the finale shows us the ruin of the empire. Female choir “Oh, you, road…” recalls ruined fates and all people’s sorrow. That is why the finale “Pledge of Russian Land” on M.Voloshin’s verses sounds so up-to-date. The prophetic poet’s words “Arise, Russia!” are heard as rhythmical counterpoint to the music. The pathetic reciting of Emmanuil Vitorgan inspires faith and hope, calls the contemporaries and makes you think not only of the historical fate of Russia, but of its future, spiritual Rebirth.

The musical group of the ensemble is very original. Eight musicians-virtuosos play skillfully three or four musical instruments. There are some unique among them: Vladimir horns, fifes, zhaleykas (kind of wind instrument), reed-pipes, bagpipes and welled lyre. And there are some traditional instruments: balalaika, domra (Russian stringed folk instrument), bayan (kind of accordion).

Enigma’s early sound revisited, explored and updated. Here are many familiar themes from MCMXC A.D. and The Cross Of Changes – tracks interfading, monks chanting, spoken voices philosophising, luxuriant beats, expressive atmospheres, muted pianos and lush effects. Of course, new aspects abound – fresh melodies, different instruments such as the Chinese Er-Hu on ‘The Delta of the Red River’ and some previously undeveloped classical connections. Notably absent are the male vocals that seemed to be a point of contention among some Enigma fans.

The banner of allegiance is unfurled from the start with a brief ambient introduction leading into one of those glorious, distinctive beats – here the drum tracks seem at the same time both original and recognisable … new variants on old structures and new structures with that conspicuous enigmatic feel. Not surprisingly since Jens Gad provided the guitar sound for Enigma, the guitar is given some extra space here, a few tracks being carried along by emotive guitar leads drenched in special effects.

Gliding ambient serenity with hypnotic hand drumming. Max Corbacho’s first CD drifts over the listener like soft sand and silk, weightless wafts and gossamer veils of synthetic tone rising and falling in delicate harmony. The tone is light and dreamy, floatational and airy – atmospheric rather than oceanic, skybound rather than subterranean. The percussive content is confined to the first four pieces – here gentle loops comprised of organic beats with an ethnic flavour roll round evenly, trance-inducing, repeating until a part of the fabric of the environment. As the album progresses the introspective nature of the music increases – the beautiful Erosion lulling and spacious leading into the final three beatless tracks. The shadows pull in somewhat toward the end, Vestiges opening with a twilight moodiness that seems to open into a clear night – the listener a solitary presence in a vast panorama.

Max Corbacho – Vestiges

The artwork on Vestiges intentionally places the album in the desert ambient genre – a style that Max Corbacho develops with considerable skill. The album was produced, written, performed, recorded and mixed by Max Corbacho, at Max´s Studios in Sabadell (Barcelona) in 1998. Released on Freerecords, the CD consists of seven mid-length tracks around six to eight minutes each totalling 53 minutes 54 seconds in all. This album will appeal to anyone looking for something buoyant and expansive with tribal beats and smooth synthetic polish.

The beautiful spiritual album, “Mantra” by Margot Reisinger with Existence, is a compilation of multi-religious prayers or mantras put into musical form. The detail that is put into the articulation of the Hebrew, Arabic, Latin, and Sanskrit words makes the listener feel as though they are with the native speaker.

The music is ambient and reflects the cultural melodies from which each of the prayers are drawn which keeps the listener on a calming and relaxed level while still varying in tone due to the use of different instruments on each track. The spiritual world music of “Mantra” will uplift your body and soul and is an album well worth listening to.

Kamal – Reiki

Continuing the theme music of Reiki, I want to share another beautiful album from Kamal. This CD features easy, thoughtful, and something else very clean and bright. Music sweet as the smile of the child, soft, soothing. In some placesextending to some atmospheric sounds in the ambient style it seems to be space music. Flute, keyboards and synthesizer sounds, rare inclusions of voices of birds - thats is all in this album Reiki

There is no sound in space, of course, and yet over the years certain conventions have grown up, especially in film, as composers and sound effects people have tried to provide aural equivalents to the sights of stars and planets moving through the void. By now, listeners “know” what space sounds like, and Jonn Serrie’s series of albums, some of their material drawn from the soundscapes he has developed for planetarium shows, well represent these impressions. In the slow-moving patterns, bits of melody and rhythm are heard here and there, but most of the music is open-ended: if not formless, it nevertheless employs loose structures in which moods or themes can stretch or be abruptly terminated.

Century Seasons is a two-disc compilation in which tracks from earlier Serrie albums have been remixed and woven together to create a lengthy journey through musical space. There are two newly written tracks that fit in well with the rest. The result is an album that blends familiar sections in new contexts with previously unheard efforts.

The Space Music: Jonn Serrie – Century Seasons

If you’ve somehow missed the delicate, beautiful floating planetarium music created by Jonn Serrie, this retrospective collection, with two new pieces, is a perfect place to start. Even if you already have all of his “classic” space music CDs, you may still want to give this one a try, as it seamlessly blends each piece into a single epic whole, suitable for your next outer space sojourn. The new ordering of these familiar tracks breathes new life into already first-class space music. The selections are hand-picked by Serrie, carefully woven together. In a first-class move, he has taken all of the space music selections from ‘Ixlandia’ and ‘Midsummer Century’ and included them here. Since these albums were a mix of more traditional new age tracks along with the space music, some older Serrie fans may have stayed away. If you hesitated before, you can now truly hear the best tracks from both of these discs.

Serrie has always had a very good knack for placement of tracks, generally starting and finishing his albums with just the right mood. So it’s no surprise that he retains some of that here, opening disc one with ‘Gentle The Night,’ his first track from his first album. Both CDs end with what were originally final tracks on their respective discs, ‘Welcome Home’ from ‘Ixlandia,’ and ‘The Last Secret’ from ‘Midsummer Century.’ That said, Serrie isn’t afraid to change things a bit, and has ‘The Tachyon Directive’ and ‘Starport Indra’ side by side, in the reverse order they appeared originally.

For the uninitiated, both discs are soft, organic, breathing space music. Though it all floats quite serenely, it isn’t quite aimless. Hints of melody cling to the drifting sounds. The focus is almost exclusively on space music, although one track, ‘The Legacy,’ does sneak in from his ‘Spirit Keepers’ CD, Serrie’s more recent attempt at playing the part of Steve Roach in tribal or Indian mode. The first half of the track seems out of place, with its wood flutes and primitive beats, but it moves back into space music halfway through, with a gentle sequencer pattern carrying it along nicely.

Of the two new tracks, one is from a forthcoming album, so only ‘Andromeda Dream’ is exclusive to this collection. It opens disc two in fine form, a richly textured piece that starts with energy and ends in the expanses of deep space. The disc is marred by a noticeable recording flaw at the 6:50 mark of ‘Gentle the Night.’ While regrettable, it only lasts a second, and will soon be forgotten in the soothing ebb and flow. Essential space music. (PD)
